Inspired by Barbara Breiter’s Teddy Bear Baby Blanket, this adult version is a simple yet surprisingly stylish knit. Alternating stocking and reverse stocking stitch squares, the blanket with its seed stitch border is knitted in one piece so that there is no seaming.Download PDF.

Notes

Seed stitch (over an even number of stitches):

Row 1: * K1, P1, repeat from * to end.

Row 2: * P1, K1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat these two rows as required.

Seed stitch, as described above, is known in the UK as moss stitch.

Slipping the first stitch of every row gives a nicer edge.

Placing stitch markers between the squares should make it easy to tell when to switch from knitting to purling and vice versa.

If you are not sure whether you will have enough yarn for the last set of squares, the border and the cast-off place a lifeline through the last row of the previous set. That way you will easily be able to rip back to that point and work your border and cast-off from there.

Pattern

Cast on 110 stitches. This will create a blanket 5 squares wide. For a different number of squares adjust this number by adding or subtracting multiples of 20.
Work 5 rows seed stitch. From this point, work 5 border stitches at beginning and end of every row in established seed stitch pattern.

Rows 6 – 33:

Even rows: Work 5 border stitches, (K20, P20) twice, K20, work 5 border stitches.

Odd rows: Work 5 border stitches, (P20, K20) twice, P20, work 5 border stitches.

Rows 34 – 61:

Even rows: Work 5 border stitches, (P20, K20) twice, P20, work 5 border stitches.

Odd rows: Work 5 border stitches, (K20, P20) twice, K20, work 5 border stitches.

Repeat rows 6 – 61 four times. This will give a blanket eight squares high. Adjust the number of repeats to get the size you want.

Work last 5 rows in seed stitch.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block.
